Following the Feature Drop announcement two weeks ago, Google Maps is introducing Power Saving mode exclusively for Pixel 10 series devices. This new feature aims to significantly extend battery life during long journeys.
White Map, Black Interface: A Simplified Experience
When using driving navigation, a single tap of the phone’s power button takes you to a simplified, black-and-white layout that includes the map overlay. Key features of this mode include:
- Basic Information: The system status bar and next-turn information remain visible at the top of the screen.
- Minimal Interface: All floating action buttons (FABs) and current speed information are removed from the right side. Only the route information remains at the bottom, and the left/right buttons disappear.
- No Gemini/Assistant: The Google Assistant or Gemini button has been removed from this simplified view.
Swiping down from the top of the screen reveals the full notification panel. Tapping the screen or power button again returns you to the full, rich experience. Power Saving mode automatically turns off when you reach your destination.
This feature is available on the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Google claims this mode provides up to four hours of extra battery life:
“Maximum battery life savings are based on testing conducted in California in late 2025 using fully charged Pixel 10 devices, with screen brightness set to 90% and Adaptive Brightness disabled.”
Actual savings will vary depending on display settings, traffic conditions, and other factors.
Note:
- This mode cannot be used with other types of navigation, such as walking or cycling; it only works with driving navigation.
- It only works in portrait orientation.
Power Saving mode is enabled by default via a server-side update, but can be turned off in the settings menu:
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture > Settings > Navigation.
- Under “Driving options” (near the bottom), turn the Power saving mode setting on or off.
